Tate turns the big 9!

It's Tate's Birthday!!! We love this little guy to bits. He is such a great kid with a huge heart and takes care of his little brother Finn like no other. We are so freaking happy to have him in our family that sometimes I just want to eat him up. He is also very cuddly and great at giving back and arm rubs!

The day has arrived....

Today I am having extensive surgery. It sucks, but must be done. I am scared, but have a great doctor. In a few months or so, I will be a better, healthier and more whole person. Until then.... stayed tuned! I hope that Eric darling will take over the duties of the family blogger.

I am blessed to have many family members planning to come out and help me and the Martinis boys. Thank you in advance for that. I am indeed VERY grateful. I am also blessed with many friends who I know will also help in many different ways. Thank you in advance for that as well. I am preparing for the worst, and expecting the best. So... if I drop off the face of the earth for a while..., it is not you, it is ME!! Until then.... be good, be nice and be safe!!

The ME trip

I took a trip just for me this past week. I wanted to see my Grandmother and sisters before the big surgery day. It wasn't the best timing and I definitely had second thoughts before going, but it turned out to be so relaxing, fun and special. I love spending time with my Grandmother and sisters. Every minute was wonderful.

My Grandmother, Eva Madonna Poulsen Coleman is going to be 95 in May. She is amazing. She is the first "fancy" person I ever met. Back in the day, she was an incredible cook, an impeccable house keeper, a mean bowler, a stickler for manners, a great golfer, a sweet wife, a strict but kind Grandmother and just an all around unique, wonderful woman. She is a friend to many, a daughter of a pioneer, lived through hard, yet tender times and has a huge, close legacy. We number many and all really love each other and get along!! She has been a fine example of love and acceptance.

My sweet Grandma Coleman is now blind. She can see just enough to play a long and exciting game of Skip-Bo and to see if you are happy or sad. She still lives by herself, is quick witted, fiercely competitive and has a heart of gold. She is fair in all of her doings, honest, sweet, tender, righteous and has a pure soul. I love her so much and appreciate her stories, her smile, her kisses, and her bright eyes, blind as they are...

Sitting in her hot house, spending quality time with her and playing Skip-Bo for hours is a treat and a privilege. Her memory is fading in the present, but she can remember the past and loves to talk about it. Her aunt, Ellis Moffit lived to be 95 and started the Poulsen family curse of living to the 90's and on. My Grandmother has lived without my much missed Grandfather, John Lewis for 20 years. She is ready to see him. She told me that she is going to live as long as Ellis and then it is her time. I think she has been around to teach us humility, long suffering, endurance, acceptance, tolerance and unconditional love. She is the best kind of teacher and I am so glad that I have lived 40 years with her.

I took some pics of things that I love in her house. She used to constantly redecorate her house, but when my Grandfather died and her sight started to fade, she became happy with what she had and therefore things have changed very little in many years. I am grateful for this and wish I would have taken pics of Grandma Baker's home. I love the bedroom I slept in as a child, teenager and young adult. It was my dad's room and the walls are decorated with the ends of wooden boxes. My dad collected them as a young boy. I love the green dangling beads that I had to walk through to get to the bedroom. I have played and played with the beads and yet they still hang there. I love the chair that Eva needle pointed and contemplate stealing it!! (O: I love so much more and wanted to capture the familiarity and sweetness of her home.

As I drove away from her home, she was quietly "watching" me from her door. I stopped the car and stared at her for a few seconds. I hope this is not the last time I see her, but if it is then my trip is even more special. I know she is ready and I want her to be happy.

I love you Grandma Coleman.
I love you forever.

Hidden Blessings

We have had a very cold winter as of yet. Colder than usual. Early last night I noticed that the house seemed cooler than it should be. I checked the thermostats and sure enough, one said 66 and the other 62.... OH NO! I know what this means...... I ran outside with a flashlight and sure enough.... our propane tank was on EmPtY.... That means no heat and no hot water. Eric is out of town and all I could think about is why why why? Well, I hunkered down as much as I could (we have three space heaters, but one of them is keeping the guineas warm...) and got everyone situated. It was a cold night. I slept with Finn and Tate. My face was cold so that kept me awake most of the night. I woke up and the thermostats said 54 and 52. It was going to be a cold morning....

I started to build a fire hoping that would warm up the kitchen area and I heard.... BEEP BEEP BEEP... Ha! The propane truck!! Yipee!! We are saved! I started my fire and go out in the crisp morning air to greet the propane king. He tells me to wait a few minutes before I turn on my furnaces. I wait and go downstairs. I open the door and to my horror, see my hot water heater engulfed in flames!! I have a FIRE in my home!!!!!

I will not give you the play by play details, but it was so scary! I did manage to get the fire out and had good help from the propane man, the local fire department and my courageous neighbors. (Thanks Matt, Mary and Chief!!) When everyone left I cried and cried. The many "what ifs" are too hard to think about, but the reality of them is more horrifying. When I finally got my little family together, we knelt down and thanked Heavenly Father for our safety and for taking care of us and our beautiful home.

I was planning a FHE activity the other night where you go on a "thankful hunt" (like a treasure hunt), but you find the things in your home in which you are the most thankful for. My hunt would be much different today. These are my hidden blessings and the things that I am thankful for today.
We were blessed and I know it.

If I did not have an extinguisher, I could not have put out the fire. I am so thankful that we have one of these and that I knew where it was and how to use it.

Our alarm company called right away, stayed on the line with me and called the fire station very quickly. I am thankful that we are able to afford this type of protection and for the great customer service and prompt action of our alarm company (Myer Emco)!

It took the firemen about 10 minutes if even that to get here. I am thankful for men and women who choose this type of profession. It can't be easy and at times, it is so dangerous. These people have families too.

Most importantly, I am thankful to my Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ for keeping us safe. His guidance and protection are invaluable and so amazing. I know He loves me and my children.

I have learned my lesson. I went out and bought an extinguisher for all levels of my home. I am ready to avert disaster and know that I have guardian angels who are ready too!! I don't want to repeat the events of today, but I learned some lessons that I will not forget.
